Post Herpetic Neuralgia
Herpes (or shingles) is a viral infection of the
skin. Mostly it is associated with small red vesicles (fluid filled
blebs) on the skin and resolves completely.
But in a few patients a burning pain starts
after the herpes has resolved. This is called post herpetic
neuralgia. The elderly and those with diabetes are more likely to have
it.
Sometimes the pain is severe and disabling.
Fortunately, this pain nearly ALWAYS resolves.
Now there are several very effective medications
and physical measures to control this pain. Managing this pain is
sometimes quite challenging for the treating neurologist.
