Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique in
which images are obtained using magnetic fields.
The MRI has revolutionized the way patients
(especially with neurological problems) are diagnosed and treated over
the last decade. Moreover MRI is much safer and offers much more detail
than the previously available technique (CAT scans). It is however more
expensive and more time consuming.
During a MRI exam the patients are kept in a strong
magnetic field. Changes in the magnetic field induce changes in the
water molecules in the body. The body too transmits very weak magnetic
waves. The machine then picks up signals sent by the molecules in the
body. These signals are then filtered, amplified and analyzed producing
extremely detailed and accurate images.
